The Department of Ophthalmology was established on September 1, 2020. The department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Botabekova T. K. The department trains students in the discipline “ophthalmology”, trains students of the residency in the specialty” ophthalmology, including children’s”, organizes the process of advanced training of ophthalmologists on a number of topical issues. Also, the staff of the department conducts thematic and scientific-practical conferences, monitors information about international scientific-practical conferences, collects data for applying for grants for the development and implementation of programs of additional education and research in the field of ophthalmology.
The development of the department, the improvement of the educational process is carried out not in isolation, but in the integration between the disciplines and their sequence of teaching, which makes it possible to minimize duplication and improve the systematic presentation of knowledge. The teaching of disciplines at the department is conducted according to the program prepared in accordance with the State Educational Standard of Education (SES 2017, 2019). Lectures on the disciplines are given according to the schedule. Practical classes are traditionally held in the form of classroom and independent extracurricular activities. In the course of the practical course, a test control of knowledge is carried out, situational tasks are solved for the diagnosis, clinic and treatment of ophthalmological diseases. The opportunities for training in the disciplines are also expanded by conducting extracurricular classes on special electives and independent training. In order to increase the effectiveness of training, they use active training methods. The main training methods include: simulation tasks, PBL, SBL, analysis of specific situations, methods of “brainstorming” when solving certain problems; round-table meetings»; individual and collective workshops; work with medical documentation, preparation of abstracts.
The department widely uses various forms of knowledge control (introductory, intermediate, final) both on electronic and paper media. For this purpose, tests of different levels of complexity have been developed. Computer technologies and various modern teaching methods have been introduced into the educational process, both at the pre-graduate and post-graduate stages.

Scientific and international activities
The University has signed agreements and memoranda with higher educational institutions of France, Turkey, Russia, the Republic of Belarus, the International Council, and Cardiff University for the purpose of international cooperation.
The department supports and encourages research activities of students of the faculty, residents and undergraduates. The research work of the student is a mandatory part of the training and is included in the plans of the educational and scientific work of the department. Management of research activities is carried out by the entire faculty of the department. The department has organized and successfully implemented elective disciplines “Diabetic retinopathy and other visual organ lesions in diabetes mellitus”, “Neoplasms of the visual organ”,” Eye Microsurgery”,” Glaucoma”,”Pathology of the anterior segment of the eyeball”.
Within the framework of academic mobility, work continues to establish contacts with universities of the republic and neighboring countries.
